Ashley Judd was at the recent Clinton Global Initiative
on the panel for, what seems to be a very worthwhile project,
discussing healthy transitions for adolescent girls in developing
countries. A program all about empowering girls, educating young women
and teaching them to participate in their society and how that
participation can make a difference in how they grow up and who they
become. Clearly a worthwhile project.
A reporter interviewed Judd at the event asking how the panel went, etc. Then later in the interview
she took the opportunity to bring up the election and how she feels
about John McCain's record on women's issues and compares it to
Obama's. For many conservative women, that would have been enough to
totally tune her out and not even bother to find out about the panel
she had been talking about. THEN she really dropped the bomb... she
INSULTED any woman who is planning to cast a vote for John McCain and
Sarah Palin with the quote, "A woman voting for McCain and Palin, is
like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders." Nice Ashley, real nice.
Ashley, honey, I really expected more from a fellow G.R.I.T.S. - I know your mama raised an independent thinker (so did I) but I'm sure your mama, Naomi Judd,
taught you better! I know she at least taught you to make sure that
your brain is engaged before putting your mouth in gear! It's one thing
to use your celebrity status to get the word out about worthwhile
projects you are involved in, like the Girl Effect,
and since it has become quite popular for the Hollywood Left to use
their celebrity to support Obama, many women would forgive you for
that. What is UNFORGIVEABLE
is that you also used this opportunity to put down all women who may
not share your views or don't support the same candidate you do.
Clearly, you only respect women who share your views - that's unfortunate for your career.
Thanks
to my daughter (independent thinker and, sadly, Obama supporter) for
tipping me off to this quote from Ms. Judd. (hugs from The Mama!)
Happy Trails,
Rox

Facts are facts--Judd is telling it like it
is.
Ashley Judd is right. McCain and Palin's record on women's issues is very bad, and female voters should not kid themselves.
As mayor of Wasilla, Palin made rape victims pay for their own rape kits. The logic was that the victim's insurance company could foot the bill. Of course, if a victim had no health insurance and couldn't afford to foot the bill...well, there was trouble.
McCain's record is even worse. He has opposed equal pay for women. He has consistently voted against legislation that would promote responsible sex education and family planning. (These, BTW, would help reduce the number of abortions. Surely, someone opposed to abortion would want to prevent unwanted pregnancies, no?) McCain consistently toes the GOP line and supports abstinence-only sex ed programs that don't work. Those are just a couple of examples. More examples are here and here.
Ashley Judd isn't "putting down" women who vote for McCain/Palin. She is saying that if they do so, they vote against their own interests. If these women are insulted or hurt when they hear the truth, it's not Ashley Judd's problem.
Women's Interests
And once again women are having their interest defined for them by someone else. Ironically, women are still being tied to and defined by their womb.
The truth of the matter is that there is no universal "women's best interests". What is in one woman's best interest might not be for another. And who am I, or anyone else for that matter, to dictate to anyone else what is best for them. I'm not the one living their life.

Free Speech is Indeed Sweet and So is the Act
of BOYCOTTING
And I don't believe for a moment that her "Colonel Sanders" remark was NOT meant to be insulting. If she MEANT it a different way - she should have SAID it a different way.
Don't get me wrong - I am all for Free Speech! You see, this type of rude, stupid remarks and Free Speech from the Hollywood Left (and the Left in general), is what will drive those undecided voters to vote for McCain.

Smart, Strong, Sexy Women Vote McCain and Palin

Wow
I don't know where to start. Really.
With this line alone, you are showing what you are really upset about: "Thanks to my daughter (independent thinker and, sadly, Obama supporter)"
You are simply outraged that Ashley Judd voiced her opinion and it happened to be against who you are supporting. Like Judd, there are many women out there who cannot wrap their minds around voting for McCain/Palin and she was dead on in her analogy.
Chickens obviously wouldn't support being killed and consumed and women shouldn't support an anti-woman ticket, plain and simple. She did not "insult" women voters, she simply stated a fact. McCain and Palin are anti-woman and Palin was picked as a running mate because she has the politics of a Republican man and happens to be a woman and McCain figured that women voters were stupid enough to vote for them because a woman is on the ticket and he made a desperate, underhanded attempt to sway Hillary supporters. Well we aren't that stupid...right?
http://MenstrualPoetry.com
shocking
its is shocking that ANY woman would not be insulted for being compaired to a chicken. Her comment was flat out wrong and uncalled for. For all those who feel there is nothing wrong with her comparison: a Christian American voting for Obama, is like jews voting for Hitler! It doesnt add up!
Here's to free speech; compliments of my husband and friends proudly serving all over the world.
So are you comparing Obama
So are you comparing Obama to Hitler? Please enlighten me because doing so is quite a leap. In no way can any leader be compared to Hitler, who murdered millions for their faith. Or are you insulting us Christians who vote for Obama, those of us who value Health Care and compassion to those less fortunate and feel the way to that is to vote for Obama.
You feel Ashley's comment were so wrong- well chef-mommy your comment makes you no better then Ashley!
Thanks to my brothers and fathers who served for my free speech and the millions who spoke up and didn't cater to the system.

What??
Do you really not know that Obama is Christian? Why would you say a thing like that?
And yes, women really should listen up and pay attention to what these tickets are about. I agree with most of the posters here in that I am insulted by McCain's choice and that I would not vote for someone who is such a "maverick" that they are into deregulating everything from healthcare to the financial industry, but would instead impose regulations on what I and/or other women can do with our own bodies.
And yes, here is to free speech, compliments of my family members, friends and co-workers all around the world. The republicans of america are not the only ones who fight for our country. And honestly, it is the democratic side which more frequently stands up for free speech so we can express our views on these forums.
Ashley Judd is a woman, an american and a voter. She is allowed and encouraged to express her opinion just as we all do here.
P
that was kinda the point
oh wait i forgot free speech is only for democrats, the rest of us have to explain the statements we make.
Did you expect otherwise? Or
Did you expect otherwise? Or that Democrats like Judd don't also have to defend what they say, which is the point of this post? Or that if you do disagree with Judd, those who agree with her, will defend what she says?
Folks shouldn't even start a discussion if they can't handle people disagreeing with them.
My question was maybe not
My question was maybe not clear and I apoligize. What was your intent with your comparision? Using Hitler in any comparision is, to me, taking it a step over the line.
I never impeded on your free speech. If I was unclear I don't mind explaining my point to someone, that is part of a healthy debate and conversation.

Speaking of free speech
Seems the Obama Campaign is against it. His supporters in Missouri have started an Obama Truth Squad -- apparently the folks in Missouri (which state is next?) can't be trusted to think for themselves. Here's a link to just one of the videos of the news report done by a Missouri TV station. There are more versions on YouTube...

Thanks for the link to Freep.
And here is a link to what I think is the entire report on Missouri's Obama Truth Squad. without someone inserting the quotes, etc.
Both sides will spin it their own way.
If McCain Truth Squads have law enforcement officials intimidating folks then that is wrong too. Although, I can't find any new reports on that during my quick seach of the internet for "McCain Truth Squad". But I will continue to search.
Happy trails,

No offense to Ashly - but who cares?
Why do we care so much what celebrities think? Everybody talks about their "influence" but I don't every remember changing my mind about something I felt strongly about because a celebrity had a different opinion. We are all guilty of attacking people we don't agree with and giving slack to those we do. All of us. On both sides.
ps Picasso was an arogant, womanizing penis head, but i still LOVE his art and will pay to see it. and i would even if he was still alive and i was contributing to his career. i just couldn't think of a contemorary conservative actor or singer off the top of my head whose work i like. :)
Carol J. Clouse at www.noclocks.wordpress.com
So true, Carol...
Exactly...I don't put stock in what any celebrity says about ANYTHING. None of them are "experts" on politics, economics, ecology...they are ACTORS and SINGERS. Why do people get up in arms about the idiotic things they say?
Everyday people also make stupid remarks, way worse than this, but since they are not famous it doesn't bother anyone.
CanCan

And That is Why They Shouldn't
CanCan and Carol -- you hit the nail on the head. These celebs aren't experts on anything - many of them aren't even experts in their own fields! That is exactly why I have a problem with them saying the things they do on a very public platform. Thankfully, all the stupid remarks that everyday people make aren't made as public.
In our country many people look at them like royalty and hang on every word they say and believe them.
Our constitution affords them the right to use their public platform to promote who they are voting for. Name calling and demeaning others is also their right, but maybe they should try thinking before actually speaking sometimes - it might be to their benefit.
Tact, Ashley, tact
I actually happen to agree with Ashley Judd, but I think it is extremely unfortunate that she chose to express her opinion in such an abrasive manner. If you're being seen in the spotlight as a celebrity, why would you alienate/infuriate people with poor phrasing instead of picking words that would either simply allow people to sit back and respect your opinion, or maybe even think a little bit on what you've said?

Oh the heck with tact --
Oh the heck with tact -- Ashley, tell it like it is ;-)
I would have to say...
I would have to say that she said in order to call attention to the issue at hand. If she had politley said, "Well, I don't believe that the McCain/Palin ticket stand behind women's issues" it would have not received any press at all.
Now look at us, we are having a lively discussion around and maybe someone who didn't really look closely at the issues before now has taken a moment to do and will be making up their own minds over who to vote for :)
Ashley
Ashley Judd is a self-absorbed, self-involved, self-indulgent blowhard. If you scroll through the 70+ posts about her at www.themockdock.com under the I Hate Ashley Judd category, you'll start to get a real feel for how obnoxious and self-serving she is. Make sure to read about her first trip to Africa from the perspective of someone who accompanied her. Make sure to read about her quotes in Allure magazine about the HORROR of sitting with common people at a party. She's a BEAST.
She's also dead wrong on this, and IS insulting to women.

I wont jump into the political part of this discussion, however, I just want to say that I watched Ashley Judd lay down in a HIV infected child prostitute's bed in Africa and she was visibly affected. I find the anger you express about Judd personally to be suprising. But to each her own.

My comment: First, I think she was trying to make a point that what Ashley said is as dumb as, ” a Christian American voting for Obama, is like jews voting for Hitler!” I don’t think she was comparing Obama to Hitler…..but I will…..
A Christian voting for Obama IS the same as a Jew voting for Hitler! I absolutely make this comparison…..Hitler killed millions of Jews, Obama fights for and supports the killing of millions of babies! Not a far streach at all when you think about it. All of those out there that want to say “I am pro-choice” should call a spade a spade…..and quit sugar coating it….if you think a woman has a right to end the life of her baby at any point for any reason, you are pro death of an innocent human being. So call it what it is….pro DEATH…..sounds like a ideology Hitler could get behind!
“compassion to those less fortunate” REALLY!? I defy you to list anyone who needs more compassion or is less fortunate than the aborted baby!!!! Goodness, as a Christian, it completely stumps me that this even has to be pointed out!
Stays on Blogher!
I am more then happy to address you her. And moonbeam for the record, and you will find all the bloggers will say- you leave your comments her on blogher, you don't take it to people's personal blogs. No matter how public they might be to there world they are our space. Like many blogger I write for different sites- and Lilmommy is my writing home. ALL issues brought up here on Blogher stays at Blogher.
Tragedies are not comparassions, to do so is to downgrade the feelings and emotions those who have lost felt. Using the Holocust as a comparassion- for whatever reason is in poor taste- And that is my opinion- I stated such and now I am done!
~Susan
http://lilmomthatcould.com/
Susan, I am having a hard
Susan,
I am having a hard time following your point. What does "tragedies are not comparassioins mean"? Are you saying that we should not compare trageides? Why not? Both aborted babies and Jews in the Holocaust are victims of the same thing; taking the life of an innocent human being. I totally disagree with you when you say comparing the two kinds of death is in poor taste. What Hitler did to the Jews was horrible, what we as women do to our own babies is no less horrible.
As I already explained to you, my bad; I wanted to make sure you read my post so I linked to your link that you provide at the end of your posts. I had no idea it would upset or offend you or that it was not a private message sent to your blog. My mind assumed that the link was there to use, so I did, I wont make that mistake again.
Have a great day,
Patti
Patti Let me put it to you
Patti
Let me put it to you this way, most Americans would be offended if the comparison was...
"That would be like a 9-11 family voting for Saddam." To me that is just shows poor taste. I made no relation to any political cause per-say I questioned the posters true intent with such a comparison- which to me showed poor taste.
